In honor of Mother’s day and our featured Light the Way Candle here at Rejuvenation Spa, our scent for May is one of nature’s most popular – Lavender. The beautiful blue and purple shaded plant can be traced back 2,500 years to the Greeks and Romans of ancient times. The Romans regularly scented their bath water with lavender, in fact the Latin name Lavare means “to wash.” Today, lavender is grown and harvested throughout the world. The essential oil is extracted from the plant through steam distillation. The flowers, leaves, and stems are steamed, releasing the fragrant oils.
Why choose lavender aromatherapy?
Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils and very safe to use. Lavender has an extensive range of properties – it is an antibiotic, stress reliever, anti septic, bacterial, insect repellent, and immune booster. The most important property is the calming, soothing effect, and its ability to restore unbalanced states of the mind and body. Use lavender as a steam inhalation to treat colds, coughs, and flu- as it will soothe, decongest, and attack the bacteria.
Other common uses include relief for headaches, muscular pain, insomnia, and skin care. Massaged into temples or placing onto a cold compress on the forehead or back of the neck can relieve many forms of headaches. Lavender can help reduce the pain of arthritis, sciatica, rheumatism and menstrual cramps when massaged onto the affected area. For troublesome sleepers add a few drops to your bath or pillowcase as the mood balancing herb provides a very calming, soothing effect. Pure lavender essential oil is one of the few that can be applied directly to the skin a few drops at a time to soothe the skin and promote healing. Irritations such as sunburn, insect bites, eczema, minor cuts or scrapes, even athlete’s foot can be treated with lavender.
