Balance Your Fire Nature

One of the most thought-provoking Aveda education classes for me here at Rejuvenation Spa was a skin care class built on the five different elements in Ayurveda. Our staff was encouraged to consider the effects of our products and rituals not only on hair and skin, but on body, mind and emotion. In this blog I will focus on the element most prominent in summer months- FIRE.

What is Ayurveda?

Originated over 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda is the Indian Healing Tradition based on the knowledge of life and interconnectedness of all things. Aveda began a relationship with Ayurveda in 1978, working with renowned physicians and scholars, who proved that treating the whole person leads to greater balance and well-being. Ayurveda tells us that the spirits of natural elements ( infinity, air, fire, water and earth) are to be found in all living things, including you and me. When these elements are balanced, your skin looks healthy, radiant, and you feel great!

Balancing the Fire Nature    

Persons with the fire nature have a sharp  mind, strong view points, and are very ambitious. When balanced they are focused and make great leaders. When out of balance, they are impatient and easily frustrated. Skin is often uneven and lacking clarity, or sensitive and looks red when unbalanced. Following are some tips to help balance your fire.

Breathing exercises promote coolness which helps to settle heat of fire in the body and mind. The whispering breath is a great exercise, often practiced in Yoga. Inhale deeply. Next, exhale through your mouth making a “haa” sound. Once you get the hang of it, try to create that same space, vibration, and sound at the back of your throat- but this time breathe through your nose.

Don’t feed the fire. Enjoy cooling foods with sweet, bitter, or astringent flavors. Eat more salads and cut back on hot/ spicy foods. Great choices include cucumbers, kale, grapes, melon, pears, lentils, and most beans.

Stress relieving self massage supports beautiful skin by bringing your mind and spirit into balance. Open your senses by closing your eyes and covering with your palms. Hold and breathe deeply, then massage the bony ridge of your upper eye with your index, middle, and ring fingers. Move from the inside out and gently press the bone beneath the eye. You may also massage your entire palm with your thumb in circular motions, and use your thumb and index to massage each finger while gently pulling.

Body exfoliation has long been a part of Ayurveda’s deep- cleansing philosophy. Daily light exfoliation can stimulate the skin, remove toxins and dead skin cells, and help to balance and clear the mind.

Aromatherapy is a great benefit to any of the five natures, but Sandalwood especially helps to balance the Fire. The essential oil is extracted through pieces of wood from mature Sandal trees, and has been a part of spiritual traditions and medicine in India for thousands of years. The sweet, warm, rich, and woody scent is a harmonizing agent and base note.  It is beneficial for meditation and focusing the mind. Add to an exfoliant or use in massage for a deeper, relaxed feeling.
